Planning for the 2026 holiday season? Cool evenings, glowing gardens and a car full of people who all want a good view make light-viewing one of the San Gabriel Valley’s best traditions. As your neighbors at Longo Lexus in El Monte, we’ve put together this guide to holiday lights in Pasadena, CA and nearby communities, from a mile-long garden walk to a century-old street of lit cedars.
Holiday Lights in Pasadena, CA: What to Know Before You Go
This guide covers Pasadena and its neighbors, including Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge and Altadena. Everything here sits within about an hour of our El Monte dealership. The outings come in three formats: ticketed attractions, neighborhood displays and scheduled community events. Reservations, walking and parking rules differ for each.
Event details can change. Confirm dates, hours and weather policies with the organizers before you head out, especially if rain or wind is in the forecast. Residential displays depend on homeowners, so expect some flexibility in what's lit and when.
A short "Before You Go" list helps:
A charged phone
Layers, since evenings can drop into the 40s
A flashlight
A card, since Descanso is cashless
A full tank or a full charge

These are the Pasadena-area holiday lights worth planning your season around. Some are ticketed, while others are free neighborhood visits, and for each one we note who it suits best and share a practical tip.
Descanso Gardens Enchanted Forest of Light (La Cañada Flintridge)
Enchanted is the anchor of the season. The walk-through route runs about 1 mile through the gardens at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. It runs November 22, 2026 to January 9, 2027, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. It's closed Thanksgiving (November 26) and Christmas Day (December 25).
For 2026, Flower Power and Ancient Forest return. A new laser show on the Main Lawn ends in a "snowfall" finale. Giant Koi appear in the Garden of Good Fortune, and Tom Fruin's luminous house sculptures move to the Oak Grove. Expect an ambient musical soundscape and interactive installations, plus some flashing lights, with snacks and hot drinks for purchase. A Holiday Market with local craftspeople fills the Main Lawn December 2 to 6, 2026.
Families and couples will enjoy it, and photographers do well here too. The route is accessible for strollers, wheelchairs and mobility assistance devices, with well-lit signs and staff to give directions, so it works for seniors too. Tripods and drones aren't allowed.
Tickets for Enchanted are sold online with prices that vary by date and entry time, and popular nights sell out, so buy in advance. Tickets are non-refundable and can’t be rescheduled, the event runs rain or shine, and your ticket covers the evening event only (daytime garden admission is separate).
Upper Hastings Ranch Holiday Light-Up (Pasadena)
For more than 70 years, the Upper Hastings Ranch neighborhood in east Pasadena has brought the holiday season to life with its volunteer-driven Holiday Light Up. From December 5 to 31, 2026, residents decorate their streets and homes with themed parkway displays, many of them homemade, with creative, coordinated designs that change from block to block. The lights glow nightly from 6 to 10 p.m.
It’s a relaxed, wander-as-you-go outing for families and couples, and viewing is free. Tip: keep driveways clear, stay off private property and keep the noise down, since these are residents’ homes.
Christmas Lights in Sierra Madre
Sierra Madre Christmas lights center on one day, Saturday, November 28, 2026. Winter Festival and Shop Sierra Madre run 12 to 5 p.m. The Winter Festival at Memorial Park brings a Holiday Artisan Marketplace, community booths, a Snow Sledding Hill, food vendors and family activities. Downtown shopping and dining are close by.
The Community Christmas Tree Lighting follows at 6 p.m. at Kersting Court, making the day a natural fit for families with kids and couples who like an afternoon of browsing before the lights come on.
La Cañada Flintridge Christmas Lights
For Christmas lights in La Cañada, Festival in Lights takes place December 4, 2026, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, 1301 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. Expect "stained glass" art and shimmering installations, along with interactive elements. It's an early evening event, which makes it a good fit for families with young children and photographers.
Other Pasadena Neighborhood Displays and Seasonal Events
Just north of Pasadena, Altadena’s Christmas Tree Lane is one of the oldest large-scale outdoor holiday light displays in the country, and one of the most meaningful. Its nearly mile-long stretch of deodar cedars, planted in 1885, lines Santa Rosa Avenue between Woodbury Road and Altadena Drive. The trees survived the January 2025 Eaton Fire, and in December 2025, volunteers relit the Lane for its 105th season, adding a memorial tree glowing with 19 green bulbs to honor the lives lost.
The 2026 season kicks off with the free Annual Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 5, at 6 p.m. at the corner of Santa Rosa Avenue and Mariposa Street, with local choirs, marching bands, special guests and a countdown to light more than 20,000 bulbs. Arrive early for Winterfest, a free arts and crafts festival that runs from 3 to 9 p.m. the same day, with artisan vendors, food trucks, live music, kids’ activities and photos with Santa. After opening night, the Lane stays lit through about the first week of January, and while you’re there, you can vote for your favorite decorated home in the annual Holiday Decorating Contest.
Parking, Road Closures and Walk-Through vs. Drive-By Rules
Descanso is a walk-through event with free parking in its lots, assigned by attendants on a first come, first served basis. Groups and buses must arrange bus parking and group tickets by phone at 818.949.4200. It's a cashless venue. Outside food, tripods and drones aren't allowed, and only ADA-designated service animals may enter.
Christmas Tree Lane is mainly a drive-by. Street parking on nearby residential roads is limited, so don’t park on the Lane itself. There are no sidewalks, and the road is narrow and dimly lit with steady car traffic, so if you walk, use the shoulder, go single file and wear light or reflective clothing. There are no food vendors or facilities outside special events like Winterfest on December 5, so plan restroom stops before you go, and check local notices for any road closures on opening night.
Residential etiquette matters everywhere. Use low beams and drive slowly. Skip the honking out of respect for residents. Let a passenger handle photos and navigation, and don't stop in travel lanes or block driveways.
Best Times to Go and How to Avoid the Crowds
Christmas Tree Lane looks best after dark, and peak evenings and weekends bring heavier traffic. Early weeknights are a fair general recommendation for thinner crowds, though nothing is guaranteed. At Descanso, less busy dates and entry times tend to be easier. Leave extra time for traffic, parking and ticket checks, plus the walk from your car.
Skip late-night residential visits, since neighborhood quiet should come first. Stay flexible with free stops so you can bypass a crowded street.
Sample Evening Routes by Area and Group Type
Drive times below are general estimates from El Monte, so confirm them with a map app before leaving. Keep each outing to one or two stops.
Family early evening loop: Festival in Lights on Friday, December 4, runs 4 to 6:30 p.m. It’s a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes, with a short walk and an early finish for kids.
Opening weekend in Altadena and Pasadena: On Saturday, December 5, browse Winterfest on Christmas Tree Lane in the afternoon and stay for the 6 p.m. lighting ceremony. On another night, stroll or drive the Upper Hastings Ranch displays, lit nightly 6 to 10 p.m. through December 31.
Date night: Book a Descanso entry time, then walk the 1-mile route at your own pace. Leave a buffer before and after your entry time, and if dinner comes first, don’t rush it.
Low walking route for older relatives: Drive Christmas Tree Lane after dark any night from December 5 through early January, entering from Woodbury Road, and let passengers enjoy the view from their seats. Descanso also works, since its route is accessible for wheelchairs and mobility devices.
Sierra Madre is a one-day event on November 28, so plan it as its own outing.
