Halloween is an exciting time of the year for both the young and the young at heart. They get to exercise their imagination through dress and play while getting rewarded for it with candy. If you have kids, you’re probably looking for ideas to celebrate the holiday — something fun but accessible, scary but not too terrifying. To that end, we’ve compiled this list of the top spooky activities to do with the kids this Halloween around El Monte, California.

The Halloween Club Costume Superstore’s ninth annual Spook Show will soon be here. This is an outdoor gathering where small businesses and community members can get together not only to celebrate Halloween but also to support local entrepreneurs. A host of vendors will be present at the event, though preparations are ongoing at this time. The organizers encourage guests to dress up. Registration is required but also free.

Location: The ninth annual Spook Show will be at the Halloween Club store on 14447 Firestone Blvd. in La Mirada, California.

Date and Time: The date of the event is Sept. 17. It starts at noon and ends at 6:30 p.m.

Trunk or Treat Cruise

If you and the kids would like to get an early start on Halloween festivities, head to Whittier for the Trunk or Treat Cruise, presented by the Kustom Oldies Car Club. Specifically designed as a fun family event, the Trunk or Treat Cruise will feature classic cars, a costume contest, a parade, music, food vendors, and literal trunk loads of candy. The entry fee is $5. The organizers recommend bringing candy to distribute during the event.

Location: The Trunk or Treat Cruise takes place at the Crossing Foursquare Church, 8410 Washington Ave. in Whittier, California — approximately 11 miles south of El Monte.

Date and Time: The event is on Oct. 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. Cars may be set up from 4 to 6 p.m. The costume contest begins at 6 p.m., and the trunk-or-treat portion starts at 7 p.m.

Contact: You can post questions on the event’s social media page. The link is available through the site provided here.

Haunted Night of Destruction and Fireworks Show

Shortly before Halloween day, the Irwindale Speedway will put on a holiday-themed Haunted Night of Destruction and Fireworks Show. The event itinerary includes several attractions, including a Jet Car Burndown, multiple races, and a stellar fireworks show. Get there by 5:45 p.m., and you can head down to the track for an autograph session. The cost of admission for adults is $25 plus a $2.50 fee per ticket. Children’s admission (ages 2–12) is $10 plus a $1.00 fee. Tickets are already on sale and are available until Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

Location: The Irwindale Speedway is the venue for this event. Head to 500 Speedway Drive in Irwindale, California — about 7 miles northeast of El Monte.

Date and Time: The Halloween Night of Destruction and Fireworks Show takes place on Oct. 29. It starts at 7 p.m., but the doors open at 4 p.m.

The Haunted Rose

For something a bit less mild, we’d recommend returning to Whittier later in the month for The Haunted Rose, a production team renowned for its annual Lovecraftian haunted house–style attractions. In collaboration with the Whittier Historical Society, Haunted Rose’s theme for Halloween 2022 is “Beyond the Gates of Turnbull,” which refers to the eerie legends of Whittier’s Turnbull Canyon. One such legend involves a fire that broke out at the Hidden Hills Asylum, causing many inmates to perish and allowing others to escape. Some say the spirits of those doomed in the fire stalk the grounds to this day.

Though the attraction can be spooky, families do bring their children to Haunted Rose attractions. Should you decide to attend, you can purchase tickets at the door.

Location: This year, The Haunted Rose will be set up at the Whittier Museum at 6755 Newlin Ave. in Whittier, California.

Date and Time: The “Gates of Turnbull” attraction will take place on Oct. 28, 29, and 30. Follow The Haunted Rose on social media or send a message for information regarding start times.

Contact: You can contact The Haunted Rose via email at scaredinibros@gmail.com. You can also drop a message through one of the team’s social media pages, the links for which are available on the website.

Temple City Halloween Carnival

For a family-oriented Halloween experience, go to nearby Temple City, approximately 5 miles northwest of El Monte, for its annual Halloween Carnival. On Halloween day, the city will transform Live Oak Park into a haunted party, replete with candy, games, attractions, and prizes. Preparations for the event are ongoing, so information about the event should be forthcoming as the weeks progress. However, judging from previous iterations of the event, we can bet on free admission and probably a few food trucks, too.

Location: The Temple City Halloween Carnival takes place at Live Oak Park, located at 10144 Bogue St. in Temple City, California.

Date and Time: The carnival will take place on Oct. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Contact: If you have any questions, refer to the Temple City directory.
