Lexus VSC

Safety is a big concern when searching for your next vehicle. You want to make sure that the vehicle you’re driving is safe for both you and your passengers. Luckily, modern vehicles come with advanced safety technologies that are designed to prevent accidents and reduce injuries. One such technology that you can find in Lexus models is called Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

At Longo Lexus in El Monte, California, we want to explain what VSC is, how it works, which Lexus models have VSC, and how it combines with the many other Lexus safety features to deliver one of the safest driving experiences available.

What Is VSC?

VSC is a safety feature on Lexus models that can help give you more control in slippery driving conditions. When the vehicle detects that you’re losing traction on a slippery road surface, it activates the VSC system. This system decreases the amount of power sent to the wheels, which then allows you to maintain better control over the steering.

One of the leading causes of accidents when driving in wet conditions is that the wheels receive too much power to adequately grip the road surface. By automatically slowing down the wheels, the VSC helps the driver steer and retain control over where the vehicle goes. The driver will still have full control over the vehicle, there may just be some delay in responses when the VSC is engaged to guard against rapid turns.

Which Lexus Models Have VSC?

Starting in 2008, it became mandatory in the United States for all new vehicles to have a VSC system. Therefore, all Lexus models built after 2008 already have the VSC system installed. This includes the latest models, such as the 2024 Lexus GX, the 2024 Lexus TX, and the 2024 Lexus LBX.

Can You Disable VSC on a Lexus?

It’s possible to disable or turn off the VSC system on your Lexus, but it’s not recommended. Because the VSC system is in place to help protect you in the event of a sudden loss of traction, you never know when you might need it. To turn off VSC, there’s a button within your Lexus that you can press when the vehicle is stopped.

Attempting to push this button when the vehicle is in motion could result in a loss of control of the vehicle. To disable the VSC system entirely, you’ll have to pull fuses associated with stabilization or traction control, which we do not recommend.

What Does the VSC Light Indicate on the Lexus Dashboard?

There are two scenarios in which the VSC dashboard light will turn on; the first is when the VSC system is actively engaged. If you’re driving along a slippery road and the VSC system turns on to help you regain control, the dashboard light will illuminate. This helps you know when the VSC is currently engaged so that you can adjust your driving technique accordingly.

You may also notice the VSC light when you start your Lexus. If, after starting up the Lexus, your VSC remains on, this indicates a problem with your system. You should treat this light as you would a check engine light and schedule a visit to your local Lexus Service Center. They can inspect the VSC system for you and look for any signs of an issue.

What Other Safety Features Come With New Lexus Models?

The newest Lexus models come with a host of safety features beyond just the VSC. Let’s look at some of the safety features you can find with the latest Lexus models.

Pre-Collision System

The Lexus Safety System+ and its host of safety technologies come with a pre-collision system. This system detects if there’s a vehicle or pedestrian in front of the vehicle. It then helps the driver avoid an accident either through steering assistance or the application of the emergency braking system. With this constant monitoring in place, you’re much less likely to get into an accident.

Lane-Assistance System

Another feature of the Lexus Safety System+ are the lane-assistance systems. For one, there’s a lane-departure alert, which provides an audible alert when the driver inadvertently leaves their driving lane. There’s also a steering assist available, which can guide the vehicle back into its lane when it detects one of these departures. Finally, there’s the lane-tracing assist, which drivers can use to stay centered in their lane, even when sitting in traffic or navigating highways with gradual curves.

Intelligent High Beams

All Lexus Safety System+ systems come with intelligent high beams. This system improves illumination as you drive, giving you more visibility at night. It automatically adjusts the high beams based on what’s in front of you, turning them down when it detects headlights or taillights ahead.

Safety Connect

In the event of an accident, you’ll want emergency assistance there as quickly as possible. With the Safety Connect system, assistance can be sent directly to your vehicle’s GPS location if you’re in a severe collision that involves air bag deployment. You can also use this feature to help locate your vehicle in the event that it’s stolen.

Air Bags

Finally, there’s the air bag system. There are air bags located throughout Lexus cabins that are designed to protect the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. The air bags in the front can even detect the seat-track position of the driver and front passenger seat and then deploy the air bags accordingly. This helps reduce injuries often associated with air bag deployment.
